There were islandwide demonstrations led by the People's National Party (PNP) to voice opposition to the new $21.8 billion tax package. However, amid protests and cries from the public, Prime Minister Bruce Golding made an announcement on December 23, 2009 to roll back some of the taxes, and add new tax measures to create a more reasonable tax package, than what had been previously announced.
