Embattled former T&T AG says PCA director cannot be fired

Trinidad's former Attorney General, Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj, says the appointment of the director of the Police Complaints Authority (PCA) cannot not be revoked by the president.

In an address to the nation last Monday, Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar urged the president to revoke the appointment of PCA director, David West, because he failed to disclose that he was a witness in the defamation lawsuit involving former Attorney General Anand Ramlogan and Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley.

That allegation is currently the subject of a police investigation.

However, Maharaj in an open letter to President Anthony Carmona on Friday, said it would be an error in law if he heeded a call from the prime minister to revoke West’s appointment. The former AG, who was fired by the prime minister, pointed out to the president that he did not have the power or jurisdiction to do so.
