Portia Simpson-Miller New President of the PNP

 Portia Simpson Miller was today elected the fourth and new president of the People's National Party (PNP). After a long PNP presidential race, Portia Simpson-Miller will become the seventh and first female prime minister of Jamaica. Simpson Miller fought a spirited campaign against her closest rival, the Minister of National Security, Dr. Peter Phillips, who got 1,538 votes. Mrs. Simpson-Miller garnered 1775 votes. The other contenders were the Minister of Finance, Dr. Omar Davies who picked up 283 votes and former cabinet member, Dr. Karl Blythe, who polled 204 votes. Eight votes were rejected.
The announcement was made by outgoing prime minister and PNP president, P.J. Patterson at about 6:30 p.m. at a post-election rally at the party's headquarters on Hope Road in upper St. Andrew.
In a race where emotions ran high, the lone female has come out victorious. The Prime Minister of Jamaica P.J. Patterson in making the announcement appealed for unity and called on the delegates and supporters to continue display the good behaviour they have shown all day.
